Senior Citizens' Got Talent
On Saturday night, the highly anticipated premiere of 'Pilipinas' Got Talent' took place. This show is a franchise of the immensely popular 'Britain's Got Talent,' which discovered opera singer Paul Potts. The premise of the show is to showcase individuals with extraordinary talents, ranging from singing to fire-breathing and everything in between. Essentially, anything goes on this show.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of talent shows. However, due to sheer boredom, curiosity, and the lack of other shows to watch, I decided to check out the pilot episode. The auditions took place in the Visayas region, which is a cluster of islands in the middle of the Philippines. The hosts for the show were Luis Manzano and Billy Crawford, while the judges consisted of Ai-Ai Delas Alas, Kris Aquino, and a prominent executive from ABS-CBN whose name escapes me at the moment.
There were quite a few performances that were somewhat embarrassing to watch. Although I must commend the participants, it takes a great deal of courage to get up on stage and perform. Personally, I'd be more inclined to eat under-developed duck eggs (balut) than to set foot on a stage. One standout act was a group of elderly ladies who danced to Beyoncé's 'Single Ladies.' They may all be widows at their age, but their dance moves were impressive enough to earn a standing ovation from the audience. I was just relieved that none of them ended up breaking a hip or anything of the sort.
Unfortunately, there were a few more disappointing performances following that number. Then came an old man who appeared on stage carrying a massive snake around his neck. He proceeded to incorporate the snake into his dance routine, even lying down on the floor with the snake supporting his entire wrinkled body. Surprisingly, the judges approved of his act. I'm still not entirely sure why. Will he be able to come up with more tricks involving that darn snake? Can you teach an old snake new tricks? Perhaps the judges should have chosen the snake instead, considering it managed to carry the old man on its back. We may never know the answers unless we continue watching the show! However, I personally won't bother to do so. Therefore, unless you inform me of what happens when you watch it or I happen to stumble upon the show again, I may remain in the dark.
Okay, now I'm just rambling. Could rambling be considered a talent?
