If you've been following our journey, you know that our balikbayan box took an unexpected detour in Guangzhou, China. But fear not, for we've got quite the story to tell, complete with battery-powered surprises, airport dilemmas, and a tasty twist at SM Mall of Asia.


The Missing Box: A Shocking Discovery

Picture this: We're on our vacation, and we're eagerly anticipating the moment we'll be reunited with our Balikbayan box. However, reality had other plans for us. We received word that our precious cargo was detained in Guangzhou, China. Why, you ask? Well, it turns out we had unwittingly packed a toy with a rechargeable battery inside. Who knew that a harmless toy could cause such a commotion?


The Pricey Delivery Dilemma

Now, here's where things get interesting. The airport personnel, in their infinite wisdom, offered us an option to have the box delivered to our doorstep—for a whopping 4,000 pesos! That's when our practical side kicked in. We decided it was time for a family road trip to retrieve our beloved box, with a little something extra on the side.


Two Birds, One Stone: Road Trip 

With determination in our hearts and adventure on our minds, we set off early one Sunday morning, armed with a vehicle packed full of eager family members. Along for the ride were my sister, brother-in-law, his pregnant wife, and their lively kids. Oh, and did I mention I finally got behind the wheel again after three long years? 


The Smooth Box Retrieval Operation

Arriving at the airport, my wife and I presented our passports to secure a pass into the Arrivals area. The moment of truth had come, and I must say, kudos to the NAIA personnel for making the retrieval process a breeze. We got our hands on the box, and it was a moment of sheer victory!


SM Mall of Asia: A (Window) Shopping Extravaganza

With the box safely in our possession, we decided to keep the momentum going. We headed straight to SM Mall of Asia, which had undergone quite a transformation since my last visit. Window shopping became our sport of choice, and we explored the dazzling array of stores and boutiques.






Abe Restaurant: A Kapampangan Culinary Adventure






As noon approached, our rumbling stomachs led us to the charming Abe restaurant, known for its Kapampangan heritage. "Abe" means fellow or companion in Kapampangan, so we knew we were in for a treat. We savored some of their mouthwatering specialties, though I must admit, the prices were a tad steeper than we expected. And oh, the service, well, let's just say we had enough time for a round of storytelling while we waited for an additional order of crispy pata that seemed to be taking its sweet time.


Arcades and Homeward Bound

With our bellies satisfied and our spirits high, we indulged the kids with a trip to the arcade. After all, what's a family adventure without a bit of gaming? As the day wound down, we decided it was time to head back to Pampanga, with our crispy pata in tow for a delightful takeout dinner.



All's Well That Ends Well

Here we have another movie adaptation of a book, which seems to be the prevailing trend these days. Sometimes I ponder why anyone would bother buying a book when a movie version is soon to follow. A friend of mine has a habit of watching the movie first and then reading the book for comparison. I advised her not to bother because, more often than not, the book always surpasses the movie. Watching a movie based on a book is like witnessing someone else's interpretation of the story, and that someone has to alter the context significantly.
