News from the States
It's been some time since this happened, but I feel compelled to write about it now.
Aunt Teeals reached out to us a few weeks ago with some news. Grandma Mely, whom Mom was supposed to accompany back to the States (as mentioned in "One Way"), had undergone a bone marrow biopsy. Previous blood tests had indicated a decline in her red blood cell count, prompting the need for further investigation. Unfortunately, the biopsy revealed Acute Leukemia. Life has a strange way of playing its hand.
Since receiving the news, Mom has been in tears almost every day. The worst part is that we are unable to do much about it. An ocean separates us from our loved ones. We long to be by Grandma's side, providing comfort and holding her hand, hoping to alleviate even a fraction of her pain. Yet, due to governmental regulations, policies, and laws, we are prevented from being there during this incredibly challenging time. It's truly disheartening.
Chemotherapy is not a viable option for Grandma, as it would only further weaken her body. Instead, the doctors have suggested blood transfusions as a potential solution. If I were with her right now, I would willingly donate every drop of my blood.
Many people say that all we can do now is pray for her. To be honest, I have my doubts about the effectiveness of prayer. I'm not even certain if there is a Supreme Being out there who listens to our pleas. If such a being does exist, why would they subject an elderly woman to such immense suffering? And knowing Grandma Mely, a devout believer in God, is this the reward she receives for her unwavering faith in a divine entity? Frankly, I find the whole notion to be nonsensical.
