I’m a Miley Fan!
I've been browsing through my sister's song collection on her computer, searching for new tracks to upload to my mp3 player. Among them, one song caught my attention, and it happened to be from an artist I wouldn't typically be fond of.
Miley Cyrus represents what I see as the epitome of pop music: young, famous, and incredibly wealthy. My fifteen-year-old sister goes crazy over her songs, as is the trend among kids these days when it comes to selecting their preferred music. Their choices are often based on the artist's level of fame (or appearance) rather than the actual talent or quality of the song.
If you were to present an exceptional but relatively unknown musician performing a series of intricate pieces in front of a young audience, and then have Justin Bieber perform, it's no doubt that Justin Bieber would receive the loudest applause. It's just the way things are.
Sometimes I find myself wondering if talent still holds a place in the hearts of young people today, or if good looks and fame have become the primary indicators of talent for them. It's a sign that I might be getting too old.
Returning to Miley Cyrus, I must admit that she does possess talent. It's the songs she sings that bother me. Her songs need to appeal to her generation, and I can't blame her for that. Her main purpose is to generate profits for her producers. Venturing into other genres would jeopardize the money-making machine. Only a few artists can successfully navigate this territory. After all, one can't have it all. However, every now and then, there comes a brilliant song that manages to be both outstanding and commercially successful. And I believe Miley has achieved this with "The Climb." It boasts excellent lyrics and a captivating melody, which has undeniably made me a fan. I just hope she can deliver another song like that, rather than another "Seven Things."
