Bamboo Live

Chevalier School recently had the extraordinary opportunity to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and they made sure to mark the occasion in a remarkable way. The student council organized a concert featuring none other than the renowned artist, Bamboo.

Now, you might wonder what the fuss is all about. Well, if you've been living in the Philippines for the past decade, you would understand the significance. Bamboo is a band that would undoubtedly top any ranking system for Filipino bands. Comprised of Bamboo Mañalac on vocals, Nathan Azarcon on bass (both former members of the band Rivermaya), Ira Cruz on guitars, and Vic Mercado on drums, having them headline an event at your school is truly a major achievement.

It was a Friday night, and I found myself in the vicinity of the school, eager to be part of the festivities. However, being frugal and lacking funds, I couldn't bring myself to pay for the P300 ticket. Instead, I settled for listening to the music from outside the gymnasium. Fortunately, luck was on my side that night. My aunt spotted me and gestured for me to follow her backstage, accompanied by my cousin. As a senior teacher at the school, she became our backstage pass.

Before I knew it, I was standing near the stage, able to feel the warmth of the fire effects used in the performance, enthusiastically nodding my head to the rhythm of "Probinsyana." I couldn't help but pity those who had paid for their entrance, but at the same time, it was a Bamboo concert, man! So I couldn't care less. It was sheer exhilaration.
