TWD S4E7: Dead Weight

Entry # 37 -           The Governor washing clothes, now that’s something new. I’m seeing a new side of him that they never showed before. -           The tables have turned. The follower is now the leader. -           Governor, your dad beat you when you were a kid? Is that why you turned out to be such a crazy asshole? -           The Governor has a fucking tank! And he’s just using it for clotheslines! -           That drip is really annoying. -           They had a camp, a town even. But the Governor screwed it all up. -           I wonder what that headless soldier lied about. -           Smith ...

The Comeback

Entry # 36 A Pacquiao fight is always a highly anticipated event in the Philippines, attracting crowds of people who gather at venues offering free live screenings. One such place is my friend's sari-sari store. Whenever there's a Pacquiao fight, they set up a large-screen TV and subscribe to the pay-per-view broadcast. It's a smart investment because most viewers tend to purchase refreshments from the store while enjoying the fight. I had the privilege of watching the fight in their store, specifically in the VIP area within the store itself. Watching the pay-per-view broadcast was a significant improvement over the free delayed telecast. During pay-per-view, they focus on celebrities in the audience during the breaks between rounds, and there's barely enough time to even use the restroom. On the other hand, the free delayed telecast bombards you with 5-10 minutes of mindless commercials at the end of each round. So, it was refreshing to have a girl show me the c...

May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor

I've always maintained that "Hunger Games" was essentially a derivative of "Battle Royale," a revered Japanese cult classic. When you really think about it, many adventure or quest stories can be seen as variations of "Lord of the Rings," while rags-to-riches tales often draw inspiration from "Cinderella." Similarly, vampire stories trace their roots back to "Dracula," and the list goes on. Stories tend to revolve around similar plots that have been recycled and reimagined in various forms. New narratives are often influenced by earlier works with similar themes. In fact, it's refreshing when a story takes an existing concept and transforms it into something even more remarkable than what we've seen before. This is precisely what I observed in "Hunger Games." It offered a distinct take on the Battle Royale premise. I'm not asserting that one is superior to the other; they differ in many ways, and both have ...

Long Day

I had to take one of the cars to the service center to have the front shock absorbers replaced. Whenever the car ran over rough roads, there would be noticeable knocking sounds coming from the front right side. After dropping off my protégé at school, I headed to Toyota Balintawak. The journey from Pasay to Balintawak between 7 to 9 AM was incredibly frustrating. Thankfully, it was Friday, and I tuned in to Jam 88.3 for their Friday Slide, where they played nothing but alternative songs from the 90s and late 80s. As Liam Gallagher's "Don't Look Back in Anger" played on the radio, I couldn't help but sing (or rather, howl) along as I arrived at the service center. I had already made an appointment a few days prior, so everything was set. The service advisor was expecting me, the necessary parts were available, and I knew the service would take the entire day. I didn't want to commute back to Pasay and return later in the afternoon, so I prepared for a long ...

TWD S4E6: Live Bait

-           Finally something exciting is about to happen. The goddamn Governor is back. -           So there really isn’t any other way for that zombie to get to the governor besides that open fire? -           There’s a fucking house next to the Governor’s campsite but they prefer to sleep in tents. -           Your loyal henchmen left you alone, Governor? Why the fuck did you let them live in the first place, when you killed everybody else? -           If your friends left you, burning houses is apparently the best way for you to move on. That’s if you’re fucking crazy. -           Zombies have a hard time getting to the Governor cause he probably smells like shit right now. -   ...

UFC 167

Image
Entry # 32 It’s UFC 167 and they’re celebrating 20 years of MMA awesome-ness. Elliot vs Bagautinov (good luck pronouncing that). - The referee for this fight is a woman. I don’t have anything against female referees but this is MMA. How will a woman stop a brawl between two men? But then the referee is a foot taller than both of the fighters so I guess she can manage. - Elliot almost gets Bagautinov with a guillotine choke. Instead, he’s fucking slammed to the ground. - Bagautinov lands plenty of clean shots. Elliot gives a wicked take down at the end of the 3 rd round. - At the end, Bagautinov wins by decision. Kosheck vs. Woodley - Woodley knocks Kosheck twice in the first round. Kosheck kinda recovered from the first hit, but obviously went to sleep on the second. TKO victory. Macdonald vs. Lawler - Old school vs. Young gun - Macdonald is a lot younger but appears to have more experience compared to Lawler. Each move is very calculated...

Foreign Perspective

CNN has been providing coverage of the disaster in Tacloban City, with Anderson Cooper reporting live from the scene. I tuned in to see how the international media perceives the calamity in our country. Aside from the occasional humorous mispronunciations of local names due to their accents, I heard their opinions on the situation. According to them, the government's relief and rehabilitation efforts have been slow. They compare it to the organized response seen in Japan during the tsunami, where two days after the event, all the bodies had already been collected. In contrast, it has been five days here, and little progress has been made, except for the growing number of survivors on the verge of starvation. I somewhat agree with their assessment, but we should still acknowledge the government's efforts in managing the situation. However, we have a tendency to act too late. We Filipinos often realize our mistakes when it's already too late. We have never truly embraced ...

TWD S4E5: Internment

Image
- The “previously on AMC’s The Walking Dead…” intro shit showed some scenes about the prison fence, Hershel, and Carol so there’s a likely chance of something happening with them. - Dogs can eat zombies. - How can an old man with one leg be immune to a flu that has infected half of the people in the prison? - “Let’s have Spaghetti Tuesdays on a Wednesday. First, we have to find some spaghetti.” And a better sense of humor. - It’s weird how Hershel thought of spaghetti after this guy they were helping spit out some blood. - The other sick people shouldn’t see Hershel and Glenn taking a dead guy out, and covering it with a blanket helps. Hershel apparently doesn’t want the sick people to see zombies in a zombie infested world. - Hershel once said that every day we risk our lives, it’s just a matter of to whom we’re risking it for. And yet he won’t let his daughter Maggie help her fiancé out in the isolation chambers. - More and more zombies are gathered ...

Strongest in the World

I can’t even begin to describe the sadness that I’m feeling while watching the aftermath of super typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan). I can only imagine what our Visayan brothers and sisters are going through right now. I can’t think of any words of comfort that could possibly be good enough to make them feel better. After being bombarded by strong earthquakes and aftershocks, this shitty thing happened. They say in the news that Yolanda/Haiyan is the strongest typhoon in the world so far this year, and it happened to hit the people with the strongest spirit in the world. We often hear in the news, even from foreigners, how the Filipino spirit is so resilient; that we Filipinos have this ability to still smile in the face of the most devastating tragedies in our lives. That is definitely true. I believe that we as a nation would be able to recover from this disaster and in the future look back on it as nothing but a small hindrance in our lives. It will definitely...

Beauty and the Boxer

Image
Amidst the Yolanda/Haiyan tragedy in our country, two Filipinos brought glory to our nation by displaying excellence in their chosen paths. Ms. Ariella Arida brought home the 3 rd runner-up award in the prestigious Miss Universe 2013 pageant. Mr. Nonito Donaire Jr. also won in his rematch against Vic Darchinyan. The Filipino Flash won via TKO because of his fatal left hook that supposedly needs a license to carry. Congratulations go to both of them for their victory. Not only did they win, but they somehow brought hope to the victims of the super typhoon.  Photo Credit:  http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/tQVvtyRlOti.irOUMRl_aw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTYzMA--/http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/omg/2013-11-09/d1921047-6f72-4477-9b65-c57f7b278f1f_UNI2013_5190.jpg   http://myboxing.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Nonito-Donaire-Manuel-Vargas3.jpg

The Whole Truth

Entry # 27 The Senate Blue Ribbon hearing has turned into a significant reality TV spectacle that I've been following since it all began. Unlike television reality shows, this one actually has a profound impact on our lives. Every single Filipino, from wealthy businessmen to children buying candy, is a victim of this scandal. We have all contributed to the funds that these individuals allegedly stole. It's crucial for us to closely observe as more information about this issue is revealed and the government formulates strategies to prevent such incidents from happening again. Yesterday's hearing was particularly noteworthy because Janet Lim-Napoles, the so-called mastermind behind the Pork Barrel Scam, finally appeared before the Senate for questioning. This individual lost her lawyer (Capunan, who resigned), and the Public Attorney's Office had to provide her with legal representation. In fact, they assigned four lawyers to her, which is utterly unfair. Public at...
